Where else in the world can you jump on the back of a trailer & get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?
Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique, fun eco-experience tour involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel by tractor and trailer along the majestically rugged coastline. Photographic opportunities abound as stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.
Travelling through the Black Reef colony (one of two colonies we visit) visitors can almost touch the gannets in their natural environment, without even stepping off the trailer. It was at this site in 1769 local Maori kidnapped a crew member off Captain Cook’s ship The Endeavour, the incident from which Cape Kidnappers gets its name. Continuing onto the Cape itself, an approximate 90 minute break enables visitors’ ample time to picnic, swim, or enjoy an optional scenic 25-minute walk to the Plateau colony. Stunning views across Hawkes Bay from the top of the Cape grace many a visitor’s photo album.
Bookings are essential – we do tend to get fully booked during our busy period of 26th December through till the 15th January so please book early to avoid disappointment! It is recommended that you try and book prior to Christmas.

Become absorbed into the vibrant world of Hawke’s Bay wine, New Zealand’s oldest wine producing area and the second largest wine production region. Talk with the personalities who are passionate about crafting world class wines from our soils. With our warm maritime climate, diverse landscapes and 25 different soil types, Hawke’s Bay is fast becoming a region with a reputation for superior quality red wines.
It is also home to some of New Zealand’s richest and most complex Chardonnays, Bordeaux Blends and the new rock star of the region, Syrah. Visit some of the best wineries and taste their award winning wines.
The first winery is Crossroads. With the roots of their vines set deep in the land of such diverse soils, from the renowned Gimblett Gravels to the cool inland slopes of the Ngaruroro River. The Crossroads Winery “home vineyard”, with a deep layer of ancient river silt, delivers wonderful aromatic qualities and the Gimblett Gravels provide depth, structure and intensity. Following State highway 50 South to our next winery Sileni, a state-of-the-art winery that is designed to crush over 1500 tonnes of fruit using both high-tech and traditional methods. Tour the winery and vineyards and then taste four of Sileni’s super premium Estate Selection wines perfectly matched with artisan cheese from New Zealand and around the world. Enjoy the tasting on Sileni’s sun drenched terrace over the summer months. Our final winery is The Mission, the oldest and one of the most sustainable wineries in the country.
